Title: The "what on Earth am I doing?" thread.
Post by: Trevillian on March 09, 2013, 03:08:45 AM
So, I need to hack portals, and eventually I'll wind up with a key at some point, or does the portal's owner have the key?

I, too, have no idea what's going on.

Many questions answered here.

http://support.google.com/ingress/ (http://support.google.com/ingress/)

There can be multiple copies of the same key, I recently had 7 keys to the same portal in a town nearby. You hack portals to obtain items you need. Lower levels, 1 or 2 mostly, should use the comm to coordinate with higher level players. Many places have areas set aside by the factions for "farming" items by lower level players and allowing them to create links and fields for experience.

The intel map can be key to scouting your area and planning your routes through it. It gives you the latest info for your area and also allows you to connect to the comm from your home computer.

Anybody still playing? I made level 8 just before I got called back to work and with the 6 day schedule and 9 hour days, I'm not getting a lot of play time.

I "play" if by "play" you mean don't go anywhere or level up or anything. After I move back to Baltimore I expect the game to pick up for me.

There is a portal down the street from me, but it's not the old naval academy. No. It's a teeny tiny burger joint.

Submit portals for public art, landmarks and churches, churches seem to be real big for portals lately.

I just started playing now. It just so happens that I live in a hotbed of portals. I am right next to the city hall, post office, fire dept, police dept, and library.

Ahhh, you poor applers, I'm sure they will get one out now that the game is out of beta.

I thought the game was developed by Google? Or did I have that wrong? If so, well, I wouldn't necessarily hold too much breath for it...

It is a Google developed game which would make it seem unlikely to be featured on the iphone. Certainly Apple would not approve a major competitor's product in their app store? However, the internet says it will be on iOS in 2014 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ingress_%28game%29).

Oh, they would - they have other Google apps obviously, and it's only been Microsoft's intransigence that has kept Office off the iPad. I'm just surprised Google haven't wanted to keep it to their own platform.

They have more than a years head start with Ingress exclusive to Android users, now that they are out of beta and open to the public it makes sense to broaden the field. All of the Apple users that get on will be relying on Android users for guidance and as team mates in the game!

Spent a couple of days in the Pasadena area and managed to find 33 portals with 44 successful hacks.

Need to find out why some areas are very dense with the green cloudy material.

Anytime you connect three portals in a triangular shape, you create a control field that influences the mind units (MU) in that area. The icky green item pertaining to the Bristol Stool Scale is an Enlightened control field.

I thought that might be along those lines.

I haven't had a chance to see what's in my town but I'll tell you what, the Pasadena / Arcadia area is crawling with enemy portals. I only visited portals that were on my path between the branch & hotel and managed to hit 33 of them.  :yess:

Still have a lot to learn, like what I'm supposed to do with all the stuff I managed to get....

Resonators are what you place on unclaimed portals to make them yours. Bursters are what you use to kill enemy resonators to clear a portal for yours. The various mods, of which you can place 2 on a portal, can shield your portal, make it easier to hack, extend link range or make attacks on interlopers more powerful. Your best bet is to find your local resistance community, usually on G+ and work with others. They may have low level farms for you to gather supplies and practice linking.

Leveled up from 2 to 4 while on a biz trip to Vegas!  :yess:

Took control over the portals in a couple of rest stops on the way back.  :yup:

Reached level 6 yesterday.

Question; I can understand taking down enemy portals but why would someone then leave one level 1 resonator?

Probably just to claim the portal before the other side does and perhaps to allow another player to then upgrade the portal without having to take out the opposing teams resos.
